The Hidden Chamber

An ancient discovery changes the adventurers forever.

The last adventure ended with Ayla pushing her hand through what appeared to be a solid cliff. Now Kai’thos decides to help by trying to push the rest of her through as well. Ayla is not grateful. She attempts to transform the red-skinned tiefling sorcerer into a squirrel, only to produce leaves at the back of his trousers and four chestnuts in his mouth. Da’ar, the enormous gold dragonborn paladin, is considerably less interested in arguing. She walks straight through the illusion and finds stairs on the other side, managing not to tumble down them. Soon all three are descending into a place none of them expected to find beneath Cliffwood Forest.

Illustration plannedThe hidden staircaseDa’ar has marched straight through a false cliff wall and meets narrow descending stairs illuminated by pulse strips of blue light, Ayla and Kai’thos behind her.

Blue magical light pulses along remarkably smooth stone walls. The structure is old, but not quite abandoned. Small beds, dirt and makeshift furnishings suggest that tiny humanoids have been living here quite recently. They find three ways forward, including a doorway boldly labelled Gobby Challenge. For a party on a questing trial, that sounds too promising to ignore.

The challenge room contains a gently sloping path, low obstacles, shallow greenish water and a cage suspended above a chest. A lever raises the cage. The party gives the arrangement far more respect than it probably deserves; one adventurer becomes particularly devoted to operating the lever while the others jump past the supposed hazards. The prize is stranger than the course: a beautifully marked metal rod, perfectly suspended inside the chest. It refuses to move. Ayla's magically enhanced staff smashes the chest to pieces, leaving the rod floating exactly where it was.

Eventually, someone spots the button. One press and the rod drops to the floor. The group has won an Immovable Rod, though they aren't entirely sure what it will be useful for.

In the neighbouring quarters, they uncover more evidence of the missing inhabitants. Food and foraged plants are only a few days old. Four small beds conceal metal panels under their rags. A battered console seems to have been hit repeatedly by someone who couldn't work out what it did. And on a rough apothecary table sit eleven unlabelled potions.

Charlie, the chicken who joined the group on their first quest, tastes something he shouldn't. Suddenly he floats, tumbling through the air like a bewildered feathered balloon. Once caught and wrapped up, he returns to the floor, albeit with a few fewer feathers. The others take the experimental potions with them. Who knows when an unpredictable magical drink might be useful?

Illustration plannedCharlie becomes weightlessInside compact goblin bunkroom, a small chicken floats upside down like a balloon over rough bedding and a few colourful glass vials, Ayla reaching to catch him.

They carry the metal bed panels to the elaborate archway at the end of the remaining passage. Its pictures appear to tell the story of an elf's life, from birth through the later stages of an exceptionally long existence. One symbol, the sign for death, is missing. As they arrange the recovered panels, the entire arch glows—including the empty space—and the sealed doors unlock.

Beyond lies a brilliantly white chamber, so clean and bright that the goblins' dusty quarters suddenly feel like another world. Blue magical energy reaches towards them, restoring their depleted powers. A dead goblin lies on the floor. Kai’thos helps create a small memorial of candles, though his illusion is so perfectly duplicated that every invented flame flickers at exactly the same time. When Da’ar moves the body to look underneath, the room begins to pulse.

Liquid metal flows from above and forms the sculpted head of an elf. Blue spectral power pours out of the walls, building an enormous unnatural creature around it. The door seals. Whatever they've awakened doesn't intend to let them leave.

Kai’thos strikes the head with lightning. Ayla conjures an ice knife whose explosion freezes the creature in place, then moves closer with her enchanted staff. Da’ar breathes fire. With each hit, pieces of the spectral body break away and sink into the walls. The creature is clearly weakening, but it seems determined to reach Kai’thos. It moves past Ayla, taking another blow as it goes, and lands a devastating strike that knocks the sorcerer unconscious.

Da’ar charges. Her sword cuts through the magic supporting the metallic head. The head hits the floor, the body dissolves, and the room falls silent. She revives Kai’thos with a healing potion, accidentally crushing the vial in her hand in her rush to save him. For once, her concern is harder to disguise than her strength. Kai’thos recognises that she really cares what happens to him.

It's a touching moment, until the severed head begins to talk.

It demands to know why strangers are inside its laboratory and asks about a people called the Caithesians, a name none of them recognise. It is bewildered by how much the world has changed. Then blue energy begins gathering around it again. Destroying the body wasn't enough: the head is bringing the creature back.

Their next attempts are frantic. Kai’thos loses his shirt trying to smother the head, the Immovable Rod is put to creative but unsuccessful use, and someone takes a chance on one of the mystery potions. Finally the party attacks the head itself until the metal breaks apart. Without a host, the entire room's magic rushes towards the only living beings left.

Ayla's ring and Da’ar's pendant respond. Their minds are carried somewhere extraordinary. Kai’thos receives the energy directly, burning with a power he cannot resist. The last part of the ancient creature slips into his mind.

Ayla finds herself beneath a blue moon in a beautiful forest clearing. From a great tree steps Vimara, an embodiment of nature, with wooden skin and leaves woven through her hair. The goddess seems to recognise Ayla and speaks about the people the young druid has been searching for. They were taken. Something is deeply wrong with the world, and Vimara cannot speak freely about it. She tells Ayla that Kai’thos possesses an extraordinary connection to the world, one that shouldn't be possible. Then she warns her: her friend is dying.

Illustration plannedAyla and VimaraUnder a blue full moon, Ayla meets a green-haired woman emerging from a sacred tree, wood-like skin, quiet night forest.

Da’ar is standing among endless clouds and colourful flags when she meets Lliira, the goddess of freedom. Lliira is playful, changing the scenery around them in an instant—open hills, ocean depths, thunderous weather—and treating the impossible as entirely ordinary. But beneath that cheerfulness Da’ar senses something upsetting. Even the goddess of freedom is not free. Lliira asks her to seek another champion, a mysterious wandering man who goes by many names, and warns her to avoid her hunters. When she creates a golden magical tether to Da’ar, her words become clearer. This strange chamber allows the gods a moment of freedom to communicate that they normally do not have. But the moment will not last, and Kai’thos needs help now.

Illustration plannedDa’ar and LliiraDa’ar stands on nothing among endless clouds and orderly rows of colourful flags, meeting a joyful blonde goddess in flowing white clothes.

Kai’thos, meanwhile, is trapped in memories of his theatre life. He sees himself as a child performer and remembers his parent's pride, but now purple threads seem to connect his family to the applause. His sister Sirith's disappointment becomes sharper. He relives the night she was abducted, along with terrible thoughts accusing him of causing it. Slowly he realises something is wrong: he never thought those things at the time. Someone is inserting them. Another memory reminds him of the sending-stone glyph his father gave him when helping him flee Canton, a possible way to reach home again.

Ayla returns to the chamber and uses healing magic on his failing body. With Lliira's help, she and Da’ar connect to him and enter the twisting memory themselves. Their arrival exposes an elf-shaped intruder pretending to be Kai’thos. In this extraordinary shared mindscape, whatever the three companions imagine begins to happen. A castle rises around them. Enormous cannons appear. Da’ar's unexpected impulse to kiss Kai’thos produces floating hearts. The three unleash impossible magic together and corner the invader.

Illustration plannedKai’thos is not aloneInside a distorted opera memory, Kai’thos meets the exposed white-haired elven Sephon while Ayla and Da’ar enter in a beam of light.

He calls himself Sephon, an ancient scholar and would-be immortal. He says his laboratory fell silent when something happened to the world around five thousand years ago. Only a few days ago did energy start reaching him again, awakening him after an unimaginable sleep. He doesn't understand this new world any better than the adventurers do, and he certainly isn't pleased with them for smashing his head. He wants a new body and continues trying to fight. Here, though, the three friends control the surroundings. They shrink him, neutralise his attacks, and at one point imagine Charlie as a chicken the size of a great dinosaur, enthusiastically eating a mountain of seed.

Sephon's presence begins to fade. Angry to the end, he urges them to find and kill whoever ruined the world and his plans. Then he's gone.

Illustration plannedOwl and laser chickenBack in the darkening white chamber, Ayla is a small blue-tinted owl and Charlie fires a tiny absurd magical beam from his beak onto an otherwise plain wall.

The party returns to the silent white chamber. The extraordinary power they've encountered has changed all three, bringing them to level three. Ayla's new connection with nature expresses itself in a spontaneous transformation into an owl. Charlie, restored to the floor and apparently no longer content merely to float, fires a beam of light from his beak and scorches the wall. The chamber's blue illumination fades. The door opens.

Before they leave, Kai’thos turns to Ayla and Da’ar. He has come close to death twice, and each time they have saved him. He tells them that nobody has ever done that much for him before. They met only recently, three strangers with unrelated reasons to travel. Now, for the first time, they feel like a team.
